Back for More: Lachlan Morton on Why He’s Returning to the Heart of Gold Gravel Race
The professional ultra-endurance cyclist shares what makes the October 18th race a must-ride for all cyclists.
Lachlan Morton is no stranger to epic rides. In 2021, he completed an “Alt Tour,” riding the entire Tour de France route, including all the transfers, completely unsupported. You could argue he’s one of the most interesting cyclists in the world. As a pro, he chooses his races with the care of a wine connoisseur selecting the perfect bottle. That’s why it’s especially humbling and telling that— but when it comes to community, scenery, and soul, the Heart of Gold Gravel Race in Nevada County holds a special place in his heart. He’s raced it before, and this October 18th, he’s skipping Big Sugar to come back.
We caught up with Lachlan ahead of the race to hear why this event stands out — even among his long list of unforgettable rides.
What makes the Heart of Gold race unique?
Lachlan Morton:
It’s an amazing part of the world and a great community event. I love the segment format — it gives you a chance to connect with a bunch of riders from the community. You’re not racing the whole time, so you can actually ride with different groups, talk to people, and enjoy the landscape. It’s competitive, but it’s also social, which makes it really fun.
*For 2025, we’re moving to overall timing only, due to cost constraints. However, if you share Lauchlan’s perspective, we’d love to hear your feedback for 2026
Why is Nevada County such a special place for gravel riding?
Lachlan:
Nevada County is beautiful. The roads are challenging — there’s some real terrain out there — but the canyons and forests make all those tough grades worth it. Nevada City itself is a historic gem with a lot of character. I ride out there from home all the time, and it’s special to have other people experience this part of the world. It’s got a really unique feel.
What do you remember most from the last Heart of Gold?
Lachlan:
The community atmosphere is what I took home last time. I was new to the area and ended up forming friendships that still last. That doesn’t always happen at races, but there’s something about this one that makes it feel more personal. You come away with more than just tired legs.
Will we see you at the start line this year?
Lachlan:
Yeah, I’ll be there. I actually skipped Big Sugar just to make sure I could ride Heart of Gold again. That’s how much I love it.
