RIDE WITH HEART

Ride with Heart: Why Lovie Bucknell Keeps Coming Back to the Heart of Gold Bike Ride

There’s something special about a bike ride that challenges your body, lifts your spirit, and gives back to the community—and for local resident Lovie Bucknell, the Heart of Gold Bike Ride checks all those boxes and more.

Lovie, a licensed marriage and family therapist who’s lived in the area since 1975, is no stranger to steep hills or heartfelt causes. With a passion for dance, cycling, and deep community connections, she’s gearing up for her third year participating in the Heart of Gold—and she’s inviting you to join her on the ride.

From "Team Turtle Pace" to Heart-Filled Commitment

Lovie started riding thanks to her boyfriend Craig, a two-time Heart of Gold participant who lovingly introduced her to what he calls “team party pace.” Lovie jokes that she prefers “team turtle pace,” but it’s not about the speed for her—it’s about the experience. And it’s about giving back.

"I’m close with the gals over at Bright Futures for Youth," she says. “And I went to elementary school with Hardy Bullock at Seven Hills. Supporting this race means supporting my friends and local nonprofits doing real work for our kids.”

A Humbling, Beautiful Challenge

The Heart of Gold Bike Ride is more than a community fundraiser—it’s a test of endurance. “It’s the hardest ride I’ve ever done,” Lovie admits. “I’m usually DFL—dead last—and the sweepers usually become my friends.” But even with the punishing climbs out of Edwards Crossing and the narrow ascent from Purdon, she keeps coming back.

Why? “Because it’s humbling, beautiful, and worth it.”

Riders pedal through some of Nevada County’s most breathtaking and lesser-known scenery. “North Bloomfield looked like a movie set,” Lovie recalls. “I’ve lived here for decades and had never been there before this ride. It’s stunning. So much of it you’d never see any other way.

More Than a Race—It’s a Celebration

After the ride, participants enjoy more than just the finish line. “There’s great food, local kids performing, and a real sense of celebration,” says Lovie. “The event is well managed, heartfelt, and full of joy. ”

This year, her non-profit Kindred Heart Therapy Group is forming a team to ride together—proof that the Heart of Gold is not only about individual effort, but community strength.

Lovie’s Advice? Don’t Be Discouraged. Every uphill has a downhill,

she says with a smile. “It’s hard, but it’s worth it. Great cause, great people, great fun, and great food.”
